Earn your "Prairie Pathways" summer reading activity badge!

Four hundred years ago, before the first settlers reached this area, the lands of central Illinois were a tallgrass prairie, with groves of hardwood trees and wildflowers dotting the landscape.  Native bison, deer, bears, coyotes, wolves, and puma, along with scores of other, smaller creatures, roamed freely across the lands.

Discover this one-of-a-kind habitat that once covered the majority of Illinois!  A Forest Park naturalist will bring the tallgrass prairie to life using activities, artifacts, and a live animal encounter!

Prairie Pathways is presented in partnership with Forest Park Nature Center, a Peoria Park District facility offering a natural history museum and seven miles of hiking trails through forested woodlands and open prairie.  Forest Park's 500 acres are designated as an Illinois State Nature Preserve.
